Betlem

Betlem or Cales de Betlem is situated at five kilometres from Colònia de Sant Pere. The name comes from the Ermita with the same name, built in the 19th century at 322 metres above the sea level four the Congregación de los Ermitaños de San Pablo y San Antonio. This coastal area between na Clara and Caló des Corb Marí is integrated by small quiet coves that shape this piece of majorcan coast, with stony substract, and small boats anchored on a rocky ground with good depth, although they are not recommended for navigation and anchoring because of the continuous presence of rocky areas. The nearest port facilities are located at Club Nàutic Colònia de Sant Pere, at 2,4 nautical miles. The name of this coast next to the village with the same name reminds us that the marine area was inhabited by the monk seal –vellmarí in Catalan-. Es Vellmarins Alts and es Vellmarins Baixos are two underwater caves where these marine animals used to live. Some of the seals were captured in this piece of coast which goes from Capdepera until Artà. The accessibility by car requires a driver who keeps an eye on the signs to reach easily Betlem. The adjacent area is next to a residential village of ground-floor houses, where you can park for free and do the last part on foot. These characteristics explain that the beach of Cales de Betlem is not very crowded by local visitors. Information about this beach may change.
