Cala Barril
Cala Barril is situated at 12 kilometres from es Mercadal, located between the Punta with the same name and Cala Calderer. In front of its coast you can see illes 8 des Colom and Bledes (Zona de Especial Protección para las Aves). This isolated virgin beach has no facilities and it is not very crowded, it is the result of a sea inlet which is the origin of a circular beach with reddish sand, pebbles and some seaweed. It is not very big (70 metres long). It is located between cliffs, with a green cover, from the adjacent hills which belong to Àrea Natural d’Especial Interès of the menorcan north coast. The marine and underwater conditions for anchoring boats are not good. There are three islands, Illes Bledes, with a maximum height of 60 metres above the sea level on this archipelago. You are recommended to avoid navigation in the strait between these islands and the coast of Menorca, because there are sandbanks and reefs on the ground. This fact explains that Cala Barril is dirty and there are stones, which go from the south of Illa des Coloms, and close the entrance even for small boats. These characteristics explain that the beach is not very crowded by local visitors and tourists. The visitors who reach this coast come on the seaway or on the trails that join the isolated coves Pregonda (with an interesting system of dunes) and Calderer. When the beach has a lifeguard service, you must follow the lifeguards’ instructions and the warnings on flags. A red flag indicates dangerous swimming conditions and means that swimming is not permitted. A yellow flag indicates that precaution must be taken, but that swimming is permitted. A green flag indicates that swimming is permitted. An orange flag is used to indicate that the lifeguard is absent. Act cautiously when no lifeguard is present or the service is not available and enjoy the beach without taking any unnecessary risks. For health and safety reasons, the municipal ordinances ban pets on beaches. Information about this beach may change.
